When we drug ourselves to blot out our soul’s call, we are being good Americans and exemplary consumers. – Steven Pressfield
Pressfield takes some shots with this chapter. He suggests that many of the common diseases that people claim to have are simply the result of giving in to the Resistance. In my line of work, I see a similar situation surrounding alcohol. I fall prey to it myself most every night.
Most every night, I get sucked in to having two beers after work. That might not seem like a big deal, and it actually might not be. But I know for a fact that if I avoid those beers I will get more work done and sleep better. I’d also drop about 20 pounds of gut if I kicked the beer.
Despite all the positives that would come from avoiding the after-work beers, the Resistance still sucks me in on a nightly basis. It’s favorite line is, “You’ve had a long day. You should take time for yourself to relax.” It’s hard to argue that one.
