Individuals who are realized in their own lives almost never criticize others. If they speak at all, it is to offer encouragement. – Steven Pressfield
For as long as I have had an internet connection, I have been forced to interact with the type of people who never bring anything positive to the conversation. They existed in IRC chatrooms. They showed up on message boards. They used ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger. They LOVED MySpace…until they all migrated to Facebook.
They also love the short, simple nature of twitter. It allows them to jump in and take cheap shots at pretty much anyone they want to without fear of having to be held accountable for their words. Jimmy Kimmel does a hysterical bit on this:
While listening to celebrities read these types of tweets is really funny, as traders, these types of people can really mess with our heads if we let them.
Pressfield explains that insults like this are a manifestation of the Resistance. When people see that other people are accomplishing what they have failed to accomplish, the Resistance directs them to lash out at those people instead of buckling down and doing the work necessary to achieve their goals.
While these types of trolls are never going to go away, understanding their motivation and struggles can make it a whole lot easier to turn the other cheek when they come after you….and if you plan on being successful, you can be sure that the trolls will come after you.
